Emiko Yamaguchi’s work draws on notions of rebirths and the continual re-forming identity, she represents a contemporary approach to self-portraiture and auto-biography. Revisiting personal history and the events of her past, Yamaguchi seeks to interpret and represent these events and the former selves who experienced them as a means of exploring how they have transformed, informed and led to Emiko Yamaguchi as she exists in the present. Whilst focussed on her own particular history, Yamaguchi’s work raises questions about self-perceptions and formations, posits identity as something that is in constant states of becoming, moulded by the interventions of the others and the impacts of significant events, as well as by herself.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                    Ian Tucknott
